Imaam Jalal ud Deen as Suyuti as Shafi' radi Allahu Ta'la a'nhu said: "The person who initiated abbreviating the salaat wa salaam upon the Prophet Muhammad sall Allahu a'laihi wa sallam hand was severed (cut off) ". Shaykh Ahmad bin Shihaab ud Deen bin Hajr al Haythami al Makki radi Allahu Ta'la a'nhu states in al Fatawaa al Hadithiyah:
"like this after the name of the Rasool "sall Allahu a'laihi wa sallam" should be written as this is the way of the Salaf pious predecessors rahimahumullahu. When writing salutations on the should not be abbreviated like sala'm saad laam a'in meem because this is the way of the people who are devoid (of Allah A'zza wa Jall's mercy)".
