Brilliant Strauss ties it up with India after a career-best one-day knock
By LAWRENCE BOOTH Reports from Bangalore
28th February 2011
Andrew Strauss hit a career-best ODI score of 158 against India yesterday as England tied an extraordinary World Cup game here. India had set a huge target of 339 runs after Sachin Tendulkar's pulsating 120 made him the first batsman to score five centuries in the tournament.
But captain Strauss put England in command with a 170-run third-wicket stand with Ian Bell before they fell to successive deliveries from Zaheer Khan. Late drama and fantastic hitting from the lower order saw them fall one run short of a win. England needed only two off the last ball to win but Graeme Swann had to make do with a single as Strauss's men finished on 338 for eight in the Group B match at the M Chinnaswamy Stadium.
Strauss said: 'It was my best one-day knock. The guys can be very proud of what they've achieved. Ian Bell played a classy innings, and when you're chasing that many runs you need to score freely at both ends. Like me, he was a little bit disappointed not to be there until the end, but we've batted very well in two games now.
'I said to the lads after India's innings that it was an unbelievable flat wicket and we can chase this. It's the sort of chase that gives you confidence you can chase anything. 'We didn't play the powerplay very well, but Zaheer Khan bowled well India captain Mahendra Singh Dhoni said: 'Maybe if we'd fielder slightly better we'd have won by one run.'
Only one man, it seems, saw the result coming. Writing on Twitter, Shane Warne said: 'Looking forward to the game between India and England today should be a cracker. My prediction - a tie!'

Shane Warne gives tweeps his tie tip
Ben Broad From: News Limited newspapers February 28, 2011
SHANE Warne has acknowledged a new career - in astrology - beckons after the cricketing legend correctly tipped a tie in last night's World Cup match between India and England. The Australian great may have had his tongue planted in his cheek when making the prediction, via Twitter, but has been rueing a missed opportunity to make some money. "I am taking a lottery ticket out this weekend!" Warne wrote on his Twitter account following the result. "Can't believe my prediction 7/8 hours ago was right ... didn't think it would happen but hey, not bad." Before the match, Warne had a stab at the outcome. "Looking forward to the game between india and England, today should be a cracker. My prediction [is] a tie!" he wrote on Twitter. In their Group B pool match, India batted first and amassed 338 before England tied the game off the final ball. Warne's tip has prompted the former star spinner to have a think about future matches. "Thanks for all your nice replys (sic) re my prediction," he wrote to his followers. "Will think of some more for the rest of world cup - maybe have a flutter."
'Shane Warne a genius to have predicted India vs England tie'
He was a genius with the ball and England captain Andrew Strauss said Shane Warne proved as much a genius with predictions by correctly forecasting that the pulsating India-England match would end in a tie even before the players had walked out on the field. "I think Warne is a genius to have predicted that way (a tie). What more can I say," said Strauss after the nerve-wrecking encounter in which his team was set a mammoth 339-run target by the Indians. Riding on Strauss' magnificent 158, the Englishmen ended the match even-stevens to snatch a point. But much before even the first ball was bowled, Warne had predicted on his twitter page that the match would be a tie. "Looking forward to the game between India and England today should be a cracker. My prediction - a tie!" Soon after the thriller, Warne posted another tweet in which he said, "Before u think there was something untoward re prediction of a tie, thought it was going to be a cracker - tie was tongue in cheek - but right."
Shane Warne a genius to have predicted tie: Strauss
Indo-Asian News Service Bangalore, February 28, 2011
England captain Andrew Strauss attends a press conference in Bangalore on Saturday....
England captain Andrew Strauss, who won the man of the match award for his brilliant 158 in Sunday's World Cup match against India, said Australian legendary leg spinner Shane Warne was a "genius" to have said that the clash would end in a tie. "I think Warne is a genius to have predicted that way (a tie). What more can I say," a disappointed Strauss told reporters late Sunday, after the group B league match ended in a dramatic tie at the Chinnaswamy stadium in the heart of this technology hub. Much before the match started, Warne wrote on his Twitter account: "Looking forward to the game between India and England today (Sunday) should be a cracker. My prediction a tie!" Soon after the match ended in a tie indeed, Warne tweeted again: "Before u (you) think there was something untoward re prediction of a tie, thought it was going to be a cracker-tie was tongue in cheek-but right." Saying that his target-chasing 158 was his best knock so far in the one-day format, especially in a World Cup and against India on its home turf, Strauss said the team was quite disappointed to have not won a match they should have, as they were still in the race till the 42nd over. "I feel a little bit sad and a little bit happy. We got to celebrate the fact it is an unbelievable game of cricket. Some great performances were on both sides. Both sides should be partly happy, partly sad," Strauss said. Excited over his own form and the way his team chased a huge target, the dashing opener said though they started very well and were very much in the game till the slog overs, the Indians made a very good use of the third power play to contain them and made it difficult for them to win the match in the end. "Their power play cost us badly. There is no doubt about it. Brilliant performances from both Graeme Swann and Ajmal Shahzad to have taken us to a win almost. But we didn't play well during that power play though we have gained confidence in chasing big scores coming into this game after we chased over 290 in the previous tie with the Netherlands," Strauss admitted.
Shane Warne is the new Paul Octopus NDTV Correspondent, 28 February 2011
After FIFA World Cup's Paul Octopus, Shane Warne played the perfect oracle, as much before the India-England match started, the former Australia spinner predicted it would be a tie in Bangalore.
Warne wrote on his Twitter account, "Looking forward to the game between india and England today should be a cracker.. My prediction a tie!"
And so it was when England made 338 for 8 in 50 overs in reply to India's 338 all out in 49.5 overs. Zaheer Khan was the last man to fall as he was run out for 4 runs. Had the Indian batsmen completed one run in the end, the match would well have been in India's bag. But that was not to be.
Soon after the match was over, Warney made sure no wrong guesses were made over his prediction. "Before u think there was something untoward re prediction of a tie, thought it was going to be a cracker-tie was tongue in cheek-but right," he tweeted.
